The EU’s interest in reliable and comprehensive statistics on the level of the State relates particularly to the EU accession process. The Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) requires that BiH develops a statistical system, capable of providing timely, reliable, objective and accurate data needed to plan and monitor transition and reform. In order to improve BiH statistics in general, it is necessary to ensure continuous training of the staff and further development and improvement of methodologies. The harmonisation with European standards is a demanding and challenging process. It is needed in all statistical domains but mainly in national accounts, business statistics, social statistics.

The Delegation of the European Union to BiH is continuously supporting the statistical sector in BiH through its technical assistance projects as well as through the supply of equipment, mainly IT equipment. The EU has also made a direct grant to the state level Statistics Agency for census purposes. Progress has been achived in some statistical domains. However, additional efforts are needed to increase the capacity of statistical institutions in BiH in order to further develop and improve official statistics of BiH.
