SUMMARY

The specific aim of this project is enabling a concentrated and focused extension to the International Commission on Missing Persons’ active Technical Assistance to BiH. This will further the search and identification of persons missing as a result of the armed conflicts that took place in the early 1990s. This will be undertaken by assisting the NN Working Group Process and augmenting the Missing Persons Institute’s (MPI) ability to excavate complex grave sites and examine highly co-mingled human remains. It will also result in high levels of DNA testing which will enable the closure of cases and the identification of the remains of additional missing persons recovered from mass graves or located in mortuary facilities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

RESULTS

The primary and direct beneficiaries of ICMP’s programme supported by the EU are the thousands of families of missing persons and Bosnia and Herzegovina society at large. Identifying the missing directly benefits the present population and future generations as it promotes a peaceful and cooperative way to deal with the past. This contributes to restoring trust in public institutions and between various communities.
