SUMMARY

The project will contribute to the intellectual and industrial property policy in particular in the area of intellectual property rights, improvement of the institutional framework and raising awareness on intellectual property in accordance with obligations under the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the European Union and TRIPS Agreement, as well as strengthening enforcement capacity and knowledge regarding intellectual property rights within enforcement authorities.

RESULTS

The EU provided a technical assistance project to support the Intellectual Property Institute in developing its capacity and strengthening the legal framework. Through this project a new legislative framework was prepared in accordance with the standards set by the WTO Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), the Stabilisation and Association Agreement and the acquis communautaire. The following laws were prepared and adopted: (a) Law on Copyright and Related Rights, (b) Law on Patents; (c) Law On Trademarks, (d) Law on Designs, (e) Draft Law on Geographical Indications, (f) Law on Plant Varieties Protection. Moreover, the project will contribute to improve the functioning of the Institute for Intellectual Property as a key state institution in the system of intellectual property protection and developing of the capacity of other institutions in the system of intellectual property rights protection. The project worked on establishing an effective system for the protection of intellectual property rights. The objectives of the project were to strengthen the capacities of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) enforcement authorities in BiH. Moreover, the project was focused on improving cooperation among institutions within the system of IPR enforcement and development of the institutional capacities of the BiH institutions within the system of IPR enforcement. This was done in order to ensure that the institutions are able to carry out all necessary functions so as to achieve development of the wider intellectual property acquisition, implementation and enforcement environment. Moreover, the project will strengthen the information and educational function of the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This project aims at raising the capacity building of the Institute for Intellectual Property of BIH through the establishment of three Information-educational Centres (IEC’s) of the Institute.
