SUMMARY

Since the establishment of the Court and Prosecutor's office of BiH in 2004, the EU and other donors provided financing for international and national staff and their operational costs related to war crimes case processing, as well as the investigation and adjudication of cases in the area of organised crime and corruption. The total financing reached 62 million euro for the seven year period, which also included rehabilitation of the complex which currently houses the Court and Prosecutor's office of BiH.

RESULTS

During the period 2005-2012 donor financing contributed to many results, including but not limited to the following : - Section I for War Crimes of the Criminal Division issued a total of 106 trial verdicts involving 167 accused, 70 second instance verdicts involving 100 persons, as well as two third instance verdicts (as of 2011 with the change of relevant legislation). - Section II issued a total of 454 first instance verdicts involving 787 persons, 131 second instance verdicts involving 251 persons, and 4 third instance verdicts involving 6 persons. - The Witness Support Section rendered support to a total of 6,402 witnesses, of which 858 of these persons testified as protected witnesses. - The Criminal Defence Section (OKO) provided legal and administrative support to defence lawyers appearing before the Court of BiH, maintained the list of lawyers certified to appear before the - Sections I and II of the Court of BiH and provided mandatory training programs for defence lawyers. - OKO provided 130 continued professional training sessions and 6 OKO annual conferences which featured prominent criminal justice experts from around the world. As of December 31, 2012 OKO has certified 124 defence lawyers to appear before Section I, 93 for Section II and 25 for Section III. As of September 2009 OKO was transferred to the Ministry of Justice of BiH. - Training activities were organised for more than 350 staff members. - The Registry provided extensive support through the Language Unit which at one point had 50 Court certified interpreters/translators, whose services were crucial in enabling the international judges and prosecutors to discharge their duties in line with their mandates during the eight year transition period.
