A population and housing census is the total process of collecting, compiling, evaluating, analysing and publishing or otherwise disseminating demographic, economic and social data pertaining, at a specified time, to all persons in a country. The aim of the population census is to provide the state Government, the Entities, Brcko District, Cantons and Municipalities, and civil society with necessary statistical data for the planning and application of the general development policy, and also to increase the knowledge level and perception for the demographic, economic and social reality of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The population census is one of the most important activities of official statistics. The European Union, recognising its importance, has ensured assistance amounting to over 13 million EURO.

The population and housing census - field enumeration was conducted in October 2013 and as confirmed by International Monitoring Operation (IMO) the enumeration was overall smooth and conducted in accordance with the agreed methodology and the international recommendations and this across the whole country. The census results still remain to be published.
