Summary
The area in and around the and the Sutjeska National Park (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Durmitor national park (Montenegro), along the BiH-Montenegro border area, has all the key ingredients to be a sustainable tourism destination. With the objective of supporting the creation of a common cross-border socio-economic environment for people, communities and economies within and around the National Park of Durmitor (Montenegro) and the National Park of Sutjeska (Bosnia), the project will develop and enhance elements of sustainable tourism infrastructure and natural environmental protection by developing joint training sessions, establishment of a joint partnership centre, a joint network of SME/micro-enterprise service/product suppliers and a joint environmental/cultural study. A joint quality standard for services and products within the area will be established. In order to develop the common cross-border economic environment and compatible entrepreneurship practices, participating SMEs and micro-enterprises will be the main target for support towards the achievement of the quality standard.
Results
1. Permanent partnership created to coordinate common cross-border activities between the two National Parks. An increased co-ordination of common management efforts within the two Parks has been achieved by the creation of the partnership centre in Scepan Polje, which was constructed and equipped during the project implementation. This structure is to promote tourism offers and service/product suppliers in the two Parks, make visible SME database and manage the quality mark “Canyon and adventure land” initiative. The ownership and management contract of the centre have been signed between Sutjeska NP and Durmitor NP. 2. Sustainable economic activities and practices inside target area increased through the introduction and use of quality standards. This result was successfully achieved through introduction of the quality mark initiative “Canyon and adventure land” which was welcomed by the local SMEs. This quality mark will help to enhance appeal of adventure tourism products like rafting and canyoning, increasing the quality and the safety of the offer to international standards. Introduction of sustainable tourism management principles inside the two national parks have been possible through several activities aiming to get involved both national parks in the European Charter for sustainable tourism (ECTS) managed by Europark. 3. Increased awareness and utilisation of cultural and natural heritage resources in target area.
