SUMMARY

Participation in EU programmes enables Bosnia and Herzegovina to familiarise itself with the methods and policies of the European Union. It is an important instrument in the stabilisation and association process (SAP) and in the process of rapprochement with the EU, particularly as regards the adoption and implementation of the acquis. The countries of the Western Balkans can take part in all EU programmes that meet their specific needs and are in line with the objectives and priorities of the SAP. The EU programmes offer financial support in numerous thematic areas. For each programme, the EU and each country decide the arrangements and conditions for participation, including the financial contribution to be made by the country to the EU's general budget. The financial contribution is based on the needs of each country. Bosnia and Herzegovina receives support for its financial contribution through the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance. Under the new EU financial perspective 2014-2020, Bosnia and Herzegovina participates in the following EU Programmes: Horizon 2020 (continuation of BiH participation in the FP7 Programme since 2009), Creative Europe (continuation of BiH participation in the Culture Programme since 2011 and Media 2007 Programme since 2013), Europe for Citizens (continuation in BiH participation in the Europe for Citizens since 2013) and Erasmus+.

RESULTS

Participation in the EU Programmes results in enhacement of BiH capcities for EU integration in various thematic areas addressed by particular programmes. BiH citizens have, in particular, the opportunity to acquire European working methods and learn about EU standards directly from their counterparts in EU Members states. In that way prepartion for EU integration is advancing in practical dimension in important areas such as reaserch and innovation, small and medium enteprises, education, youth, sport, culture, media, civil society, and will continue in many others depanding on BiH joining new EU programmes.
